As students, teachers and staff return to school, the Ontario government is providing up to $1.3 billion in critical supports and has delivered more than 37 million pieces of personal protective equipment (PPE) to safely reopen classrooms across the province. This includes 19.5 million masks, 16 million gloves, 317,000 face shields, 320,000 bottles of hand sanitizer, and 218,000 containers of disinfectant, among other critical supplies.
The following public health protocols and procedures will be implemented to help protect students, teachers, staff and visitors:
1. Parents must screen their children and all staff must self-screen every day before attending school. Students and staff who are unwell must stay home from school.
2. Schools must immediately report any suspected or confirmed cases of COVID-19 within the school to the local public health unit. Every day, school boards must report any staff or student absences due to confirmed cases of COVID-19 to the ministry.
3. Students in Grades 4-12 will be required to wear face coverings (non-medical or cloth masks) indoors in school, including in hallways, entrances and during classes. Face coverings are not required but are encouraged for students up to Grade 3. The province is funding each school board to provide PPE to teachers and other school-based staff, including medical masks and eye protection (for example, face shields).
4. Schools will teach and remind students about appropriate hand hygiene and provide breaks in schedules to allow students to wash their hands. Teachers and staff are also receiving additional health and safety training.

Dr. Elizabeth Richardson, Hamilton’s medical officer of health, said Tuesday that some of the city’s COVID statistics — mainly those dealing with “exposure information” — are incorrect.
As for what’s causing the reporting problems, Richardson pointed to issues with transitioning to a new case and contact management (CCM) system. That transition occurred over the weekend of Aug. 23 and 24, but public health staff are still in troubleshooting mode, she said.
There remain discrepancies between Ontario’s daily report of COVID numbers in Hamilton and Hamilton public health’s own daily COVID numbers.
Richardson says to trust the local numbers. A disclaimer on the provincial website says the same.
Richardson said the discrepancies could be due to a lag in update timing — the province’s numbers are based off numbers Hamilton reported the previous day — but also could be due to problems with data entry, she said.

The COVID Alert App lets you know if you may have been exposed to the virus. You can then get tested, keeping you and your community safe.
Ontarians who test positive for COVID-19 can choose to send a notification to other app users who have been near them, without sharing any personal information, enabling them to take action sooner.
Users who receive a notification that they may have been exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 will also receive appropriate recommendations based on current public health guidance.
The app does not know where or when someone encounters another user, and does not collect or share any user’s location, name, address, contacts or health information.

A Hamilton volunteer organization Good Neighbour Sewing Group has made over 3000 surgical caps for hospitals, long term homes in Hamilton and GTA for free. All surgical caps are hand crated by group members, their families and children using 100% cotton cloth, new or gently used after the wash and heat dry. They have received orders for over 3000 surgical caps since April 10, 2020. According to the feedback, they improve the design by narrow down the back for the comfort and add 2 buttons for wearing masks. Contactless pickup locations are in Hamilton, Mississauga/Vaughan, Richmond Hill and Scarborough. They urge the recipient to place the donated items in quarantine for a minimum of three days before using it. Back to February Good Neighbour organized few online seminars with doctors and health science professionals to introduce COVID-19 related information. If you, or your groups, or the organization needs fabric-made items made from them, please make your request here. If you want to help, learn how to sew a surgical caps from here.
